One of the big dilemmas of games is how to give players a chance to catch up while still allowing players to benefit from skillful play. The Archon role in Parthenon is probably the best way of countering this dilemma that I have ever seen. It typically gives the player perceived to be the least powerfull a great ability to influence who wins conflicts and who is hit the hardest by hazards. It works wonderfully and ensures an engaging game for alll players.
