From the Publisher...

Historically, Albrecht von Wallenstein, duke of Friedland and Mecklenburg was one of the most important mercenary commanders of the Imperial army during the Thirty Years' War (1618-48). His overweening ambition was to head a large central European empire which got him dismissed in 1630. Such was his power, however, that the empire was forced to reinstate him when Sweden came into the fray. He recovered Bohemia, but was defeated by Gustavus Adolphus at L├╝tzen, and was again dismissed. His subsequent intrigues with Protestant forces alarmed the Catholic princes who were probably complicit in his assassination in 1634 by Irish mercenaries at Eger, Hungary.

The game begins with the start of the war, each player controlling several countries. Player actions include the conquest of new countries, tax collection, erection of buildings (i.e. development of the economy), feeding the populace, victualling the army, etc. Some actions increase the chance for unrest and expensive rebellions can occur. The strongest power at the end wins.

Finally picked up a copy after much searching. Although completely in german, this is a very worthy addition to any serious gamers collection. All of the good stuff that has beeen written about it is true. Excellent game!

Ideal combination of "eurogame" mechanics with others from wargaming. Many ways to play, and almost entirely language independant! The jewel of my collection!

Dave Daring - Eagles
I have taught many players this game and it is easy to learn and definitely unique. You should try it.

Tim Kennedy
I've heard this described as 'Risk on steroids.' Catchy, but it just doesn't do justice to this fantastic game where resource management, building and combat all must be juggled each turn. There are some brilliant mecahnics at work here, including the combat resolution system. Don't let the German language scare you off, secure a copy and download the necessary translations, there aren't that many, from the Geek. You will not be disappointed.

What really makes this game for me is the simultaneous action selection. It is a great way to reduce downtime and it introduces an element of uncertainty that is determined by your opponents instead of being random.
